Norwegians have put on their safety glasses

The autumn of 2022 has been characterized by price rises and interest rate hikes, and Norwegians have had to put on their savings glasses. Several stated that they would spend less money on goods and services in the future, and the proportion who were pessimistic about the household's finances in the next year increased month by month. In the latest measurements of consumer sentiment, however, we see that the negative trend has stabilised. The proportion who say they have a pessimistic view of the household's finances in the next year is now 29% - compared to 26% who are optimistic.

We see the same tendency in consumption of goods and services in December. The proportion who are thinking of reducing their consumption is no longer increasing, and is now at the same level as in the previous survey. Most (48%) say that consumption of goods and services will be unchanged, while 5% actually expect to buy more than usual at this time of year.

What worries people the most is increased prices for goods and services that people depend on in everyday life. A full 64% state that this is something they believe will affect them in the coming 12 months. Christmas is associated with many costs, and as a consequence of the economic situation, it is probably conceivable that many households will look for opportunities to save where they can!

But we don't cut back on the Christmas treats!

The food chains will be assessed more carefully when we go shopping for Christmas food this year. 60% state that they would like to keep a better eye on the chains' offers, and make use of them. More than half say they want to plan better and think more economically in order to be able to buy what they use to buy. It is because Christmas food and Christmas treats are a tradition, and so important to us, that we prioritize it, even if it is expensive. In other words, it is more important than ever that advertisers in grocery and FMCG are visible in the market.

But what about the gifts? This year it may be that the offers control what lies under the Christmas tree! 52% say that the offers when shopping for Christmas presents will determine what is bought to a greater extent than before. Having said that, almost 60% will either not at all or to a small extent want to spend less money on Christmas presents. And if you're wondering how many people you buy Christmas presents for on average, the answer is a whopping 11 people. Our tip here is to be creative, bring out the offers and features of your product in a way that stands out.
